    9Russia – Denis Cheryshev

Denis Cheryshev is the new crop of players who have come through the Russian system and have been making a mark in the European circuit. Born in Nizhny Novgorod to the Sporting di Gijon player Dmitri Cheryshev, Denis started his career with Sporting di Gijon. At the age of 9, he joined Real Madrid and was heavily involved with the reserve side of Real Madrid.

He made his debut for the senior Real Madrid team in November 2012. However, he spent the next two seasons on loans at Sevilla and Villarreal. In 2016, Denis Cheryshev joined Villarreal permanently. Eligible to play for both Spain as well as Russia, Cheryshev decided to opt for Russia and made his international debut in 2013 during a 2014 World Cup qualifier. His next international participation came about in 2018 after suffering from injuries for a couple of years.

Included in the Russian team for the 2018 World Cup, he kicked off the home world cup in style as he plundered two goals off the bench in Russia’s first match rout of Saudi Arabia as they came out 5-0 winners. After having been included in the starting line up for the second match, he followed his performance with another goal in Russia’s 3-1 win over Egypt. Denis Cheryshev is proving to Russia’s talisman despite the reports of doping claims against the Russian football team.
