5The second Amendment is ancient
There is no amendment which attracts the kind of attention and debate as does the Second Amendment. In full, the Second Amendment reads as “A well-regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.”
The irony is that almost everyone against gun control only focuses on the phrase ‘bear arms’ without taking into context the rest of the sentence. They real ey word there is ‘militia’. The Second Amendment dates back to 1791! The United States of America did not exist then. There were regions continuously at war with each other. The word ‘Union’ had just been introduced. The possibility of invasion by another region was frighteningly real, and the Second Amendment was put in place to make sure that a citizen’s militia could defend the principles of the constitution.
