Born in Chennai on January 6, 1967, A.R. Rahman joined the troupe of well-known South Indian music director Ilaiyaraaja. He got his major break when his Guru asked him to compose the music for ‘Roja’ in 1991. The music of the film became blockbuster and there was no looking back ever since. Rahman established himself as one of the leading music composers in the country with hits like ‘Bombay’, ‘Kadhalan’, ‘Dil Se’, ‘Lagaan’, ‘Swades’, ‘Rang De Basanti’ and ‘Guru’ among others. Apart from winning many awards at home turn, Rahman has won international acclaim. He composed the score and soundtrack for the Oscar winning film ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ (2008). This work fetched him two Oscars and a Golden Globe. He is a recipient of the Padma Shri. He has also been involved in various international projects like ‘Elizabeth: The Golden Age’. In 2010 he was awarded the Padma Bhushan, which is third in the list of civilian awards conferred by the government of India. He also took home the Filmfare Best Music Director Award for his music in the film ‘Delhi 6’ in 2010.

TRIVIA: A Street in Markham, Ontario, Canada has been named in his honour in November 2013.
