A journey which commenced in a small village of Punjab culminated in a Portugal jail. A girl who wanted to make her mark in the showbiz and rule the hearts of millions ended up being an internationally wanted criminal. At first, it may just sound like a few lines lifted from a Bollywood flick, but here we are not talking about any masala film from any industry, we are talking about the grim reality of a beautiful diva’s life. And that beautiful and scintillating diva was none but Monica Bedi.

Monica, who starred in films like ‘Jodi No 1’ and ‘Aashiq Mastana’, was allegedly caught with her paramour Abu Saleem by the Lisbon police for entering into Portugal with forged documents. She was sentenced to two years imprisonment for the crime in the year 2003. The scarlet had not one but two cases against her in India relating to “conspiracy and cheating with a view to obtaining a forged passport”. Luckily for her, the Portuguese government dropped one of the charges against her – of getting married to a local man to get a resident permit. Bedi’s passport was issued in the name of Sana Malik Kamal while Salem, an underworld don wanted in connection with the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts, got the passport issued in the name of Ramil Kamal Malik. The case came to light in February 2002 when the Intelligence Bureau got a tip-off that the couple had used fake passports during a trip to Dubai.

The actress’ period of sentence came to an end in September 2004. She then applied for asylum in Portugal. But the executive authorities rejected her request. But Monica was not the one to sit down and wait the fate to unfold. On November 7, 2004 she wrote a letter to the then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh requesting to cancel proceedings against her. She even denied her association with Salem and went on to record that she had nothing to do with his criminal acts. She pleaded that she be allowed to return to Norway, where her parents had immigrated 18 years ago. But the court found her guilty and, on the charges of cheating, criminal conspiracy and impersonation while securing a fake passport, sentenced five years’ rigorous imprisonment. But in 2007, she secured a bail from a Hyderabad court.
