12No One Killed Jessica

Set against the backdrop of New Delhi, ‘Nobody Killed Jessica’ (2011), was premised on the true story of Jessica Lal murder case. Delhi based model Jessica Lal was shot dead when she was attending a socialite party in the national capital. Siddharth Vashisht, also known as Manu Sharma, was accused of the murder. But using the influence of his powerful father Venod Sharma, who happened to be a Congress-nominated Member of Parliament from Haryana, Vashisht managed to get out of jail. He was acquitted of all charges on 21 February 2006. However, following intense media and public pressure, the case was reopened and overturning the trial court’s judgment the Delhi High Court sentenced life imprisonment to Siddharth Vashisht on 20 December 2006.

The incident inspired filmmaker Raj Kumar Gupta to make a film on it. After carrying out an in-depth research, he completed his story and signed Rani Mukerji and Vidya Balan to play two female leads in the movie. Vidya played the character of Sabrina Lal, Jessica’s older sister, while Rani Mukerji essayed the character of Meera Gaity, the badass news reporter following the story.

The biographical thriller produced by UTV Spotboy released on 7th January, 2011. Critics praised the movie and gave positive reviews. The audience too loved the film and made is one of the most successful movies of the years. The film was well received at several award functions held that year. Filmfare nominated it for four awards, including the Filmfare Award for Best Film and the Filmfare Award for Best Actress. Actress for Rani Mukerji won the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress for her terrific performance in the film.

TRIVIA: Before Raj Kumar Gupta, Prahlad Kakkar was directing a film in 2006 touching upon the same topic. However, it got shelved.
