8RANG DE BASANTI
It has been more than ten years since ‘Rang De Basanti’ hit theaters and took the Indian box office by surprise. But the film and memories associated with it still remain so fresh in our minds that it feels like the movie came out yesterday. Apart from appealing to a larger section of the audience, the film had a noticeable social influence also. It instigated intense political discussions and made people, bureaucrats and politicians more responsible towards the nation.
One of the major attractions of the film was its star cast, which boasted the presence of Aamir Khan, R. Madhavan, Soha Ali Khan, Sharman Joshi, Siddharth Narayan, Kunal Kapoor, Atul Kulkarni and British actress Alice Patten. But do you know that when filmmaker Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra set out to lock the casting, he wanted Hrithik Roshan in the movie? No, he did not want to cast Hrithik for Aamir Khan’s role. In fact, he was willing to take the actor onboard for one of the supporting characters. But Hrithik denied playing a second fiddle to somebody. In fact, some reports suggested that Hrithik wanted to play the lead role of DJ which was offered to Aamir Khan. But when Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra refused to comply with his demand, Hrithik decided not to do the movie. After some time, some media reports also claimed that Hrithik could not do the film because he was busy with his home production’s ‘Krrish’, which made him to let go this opportunity.
Upon its release, ‘Rang De Basanti’ opened to overwhelmingly positive response in domestic as well as overseas market. It won the National award for most popular film in 2006.
