Mithun Chakraborty, the original dancing jack, is not just an excellent actor and brilliant dancer, but he is a black belt in a kung fu style also. The talented actor, who started his career as a junior artist and went on to establish himself as one of the biggest stars in Bollywood, has shown his martial arts skills in a number of films he has done in his career spanning across more than three decades.
Born on 16 June 1950, Chakraborty is a name to reckon with. He has proved his acting mettle in more than 350 Hindi, Bengali, Oriya, Tamil and Telugu films. For his outstanding acting prowess, the Indian Government has bestowed on him three National Film Awards. He first won the National Film Awards for Best Actor for the Hindi film ‘Mrigayaa’ in 1976. He walked away with his second National Film Awards for Best Actor in 1992 when he won the award for the Bengali movie ‘Tahader Katha’. He was again honored with the National Film Awards for Best Supporting Actor for the Hindi movie ‘Swami Vivekananda’ in 1995.
Though Mithun has appeared in many films belonging to various popular genres, he is best remembered for his role as Jimmy in the movie ‘Disco Dancer’ (1982), which turned out to be the biggest blockbuster of his movie career. Apart from India, the film performed unbelievingly well in several other parts of the world also, especially Russia. In Russia, Chakraborty and Raj Kapoor are still the most popular Indian actors. Besides ‘Disco Dancer’, the actor has some of the most notable films of Hindi cinema to his credit, such as ‘Suraksha’, ‘Saahas’, ‘Wardat’, ‘Pyar Jhukta Nahi’, ‘Dance Dance’ and ‘Agneepath’. For his role as Krishnan Iyer Nariyal paniwala for the movie ‘Agneepath’, Dada, as he is popularly called, won the Filmfare Best Supporting Actor award. He will next be seen in the Bangladeshi film ‘Hason Raja’.
TRIVIA: Mithun Chakraborty was a wrestler in his younger days. In 1967, he won the West Bengal State Wrestling Championship in the Junior Category.
