Generally, what happens in Bollywood and many other film producing industries in the world is that if an actor has established himself by proving his mettle in various successful films, makers don’t want him to go through any audition process before casting him in their movies. But the same did not happen with superstar Shah Rukh Khan when he was approached to play the male lead in Ashutosh Gowarikar’s ambitious project ‘Swades’ (2004), a film which went onto receive unprecedented critical acclaim from critics and a cult following in India and several other parts of the globe.

If you Google the audition tape of Shah Rukh Khan for the film ‘Swades’ on YouTube you will find the superstar mouthing his dialogues with consummate ease. SRK plays a scientist in the film, who works as a project manager at NASA in the United States before returning to his village and dedicating his whole life for the upliftment of his people in the village. This audition of him proves why he is hailed as the King of Bollywood. His dialogue delivery and the intensity he brings to his lines hit the spot. In this tape, you can also see his costar, Gayatri Joshi. She also does her lines seamlessly for which she even receives compliment from the megastar. Shah Rukh is known to take good care of his costars and this auditions tape once again proves how considerate and courteous our superstar is towards women.

Talking about the film, it is true that ‘Swades’ did not leave the cash registers jingling upon its release on 17th December, 2014, but it did receive widespread critical acclaim. It was one of the highly rated films of Shah Rukh Khan’s career at the time of its release. The film was declared an average grosser at the ticket window after its theatrical run. However, over the years, it has attained a cult following among the audience and film enthusiasts. The film has seen multiple TV repeats since its release and has been received extremely well by the TV audience.
